I have been reading to my kids since they were in the womb. I also talked to them all day to expand their vocabulary and so that they would recognize my voice in the hopes that I was their favourite.
I've learned a lot about the types of books my kids like for each reading level. But each child is a little different. Here's my list of the best books for babies to pre-kindergarten. They're also adult friendly, because sometimes they find one that they love that we have to read 3 times a day, so you might as well buy some that are tolerable.

Sandra Boynton & Eric Carle: These were the best for my littles before age one. They liked the colours and rhymes, the short stories were great for their even shorter attention spans. Plus, board books are pretty much the only things you can put in front of a baby because precious paper pages are never safe.

Pete The Cat: These books are amazing to begin reading. They love the crazy stories and the rhymes. I noticed they helped my oldest write her letters as we traced the words as we read. These are big in the kindergarten grades, I haven't met a kid who doesn't love this cool cat.

Mercer Mayer: Great learning books for toddlers and older kids. A lot of the ones we own prepared my eldest with fun life lessons, like preparing for kindergarten or becoming an older sibling. My oldest also learned her first sight words with these books.

Dr. Seuss: I've loved these since I was little. My kids have loved them since they were born and the books seem to grow with the kids, they never get sick of them. It must be the rhymes, colours and silly stories. To be honest, even I still enjoy them. I'm proud that my kiddos inherited some of my childhood books and that we're able to expand their libraries with new ones.
