Pizza Pie: Mystic Pizza

One of the first things you see when you walk into the Mystic Location.

My husband LOVES pizza! His top three foods are spaghetti, burgers and pizza so you can imagine how easy he is to please. He came up with the genius idea that we should try a new pizza place every Friday. It may sound like a lot but the average American family eats out about eighteen times a month, so four times a month for us isn't bad.

Maybe one day I'll kind of hash out the meals that Eddie and I eat during a week. We're not the epitome of health but we more often than not prepare our meals at home and with fresh ingredients.

Perusing the menu - there were so many options! You can see the movie "Mystic Pizza" playing in the background.

You may have heard of Mystic Pizza, whether it be the restaurant or the 1988 film starting Julia Roberts, Lili Taylor, Annabeth Gish and many more. Both are wonderful. While I love the movie because it is about two sisters and their friend working at the famous Mystic Pizza and working through their autumn love trials and tribulations it's just a fun movie. You fall in love with the Connecticut setting of a small, busy coastal town and with the characters too. I feel like I'm Daisy.

After I had watched the movie, we FINALLY visited Mystic Pizza and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. I come from a town where Italian food is the game and basically the only type of food you'll find, so I've had my fair share of pizza over the past decade.

Mystic Pizza started in 1973 by the Zelepo family, because of their secret recipe and addicting flavours, they're still just as popular today. They offer a wide variety of food from soups and salads to hot and cold "grinders" (which is a sandwich in New England), calzones, pastas and anything you can grill. But we went for the pizza.

I dream of their mozza sticks.

We ordered their mozzarella sticks for an appetizers and there is no way those bad boys are frozen. They were crisp and light on the outside and the mozzarella pulled when you bit into it like you were eating fresh mozzarella. It was served with a very flavourful marinara sauce.

Then came the pizza. Oh how my mouth still waters. We did bite into it a little too early, the kitchen is so close you can see it from your seat - let your pizza cool for a minute or two. We ordered a large (14 inch) pizza with pepperoni and bacon. The pizza pulled apart easily and kept it's form. The crust wasn't thick but held the cheese, pepperoni and thick bacon slices well. I appreciated that they were visible slices of bacon and not bits on our pizza. The crust was light and not chewy at all.

He was very unaware I was taking this photo - I apologize!

But look at all that pizza goodness.

The pizza shop has a gift shop area that is attached to the take-out portion of the restaurant as well as the bar. Very well lit, quaint and reasonably priced. The entire restaurant is decorated with lights, movie memorabilia, license plates and oceanside decor.

This is the bar area, to the right is where the little gift shop is.

Mystic Pizza does offer parking behind the restaurant and we were lucky enough to not have to wait for seating during our visit. The service was pretty great. We didn't finish our pizza and the server put our pizza in to-go boxes that would fit in the saddle bags of Eddie's motorcycle. I highly recommend Mystic Pizza if not to satisfy a pizza craving to at least enjoy the atmosphere. It really is a slice of heaven.
